What to ask at each table
Many local and city organizations will be represented during the expo. Here is a list of what each organization does so you can go straight to the tables you need.
- LAPD, Wilshire & Olympic Divisions
- The two divisions that cover this area. Please bring specific issues about what is happening on your block/neighborhood to the EXPO (11A–2PM) where you can talk directly to senior lead officers in both divisions: how to properly report an issue so it gets attention, and what the division is doing about it. Senior officers from both divisions will be taking broader community-based questions (vs specific block-based concerns) at the Town Hall (2PM–4PM).
- LAFD: Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
- The fire department’s CERT volunteers. CERT trains ordinary residents to handle the first hours of an emergency (search, first aid, shutting off gas) for the realistic case where LAFD is committed elsewhere. Ask how to get trained.
- LA Emergency Management Department
- The city department that plans for the bad day: earthquake, fire, flood, a long power outage. Ask how the city will reach you when one happens, and more importantly, which preparations are worth doing now rather than the week after.
- LA Sanitation (LASAN)
- LA Sanitation will be on hand to answer both your recycling questions, as well as any solid waste issues. Confused by what to recycle? Be sure to have LASAN’s “Sort LA” app on your phone.
- Los Angeles County West Vector Control District
- The agency that tracks and treats mosquitoes across this part of the county, including the invasive day-biting kind that can breed in a bottle cap of standing water. Worth asking what to empty in your own yard, and who to call about a pool down the street that nobody is maintaining.
- American Red Cross
- Help with the part most households skip: how to get ready for that bad day: what belongs in a “go” kit you can grab on your way out the door. Assistance planning all the things you may have overlooked: pets, senior family members, special medical needs, where to go in an emergency?
- Statewide California Earthquake Center (USC)
- Advanced earthquake researchers based at USC. We will have the Director of Public Education to ask all your earthquake preparedness questions, he will also be leading an Earthquake Preparedness workshop.
- Office of Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, Third District
- Lindsey Horvath represents the Third District on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The County runs a different set of emergency, public health & mental health services than the City. Horvath’s office will be on hand to answer questions that fall outside the City and City Council’s jurisdiction. A great chance to interact with your Supervisor District’s office!
- City Council Offices, CD5 and CD13
- Greater Wilshire sits across two city council districts (CD5 & CD13), bring your address and staff can tell you which one you are in. These are the people for the streetlight, the sidewalk, the safety concern, the thing you have already reported twice. Get to know your community field reps!
- Safety & Security Window Film
- Talk to the reps for the window film LAPD rates for slowing forced entry. Worth a look if you have ground-floor glass and have been weighing bars, which most people would rather not install.
- Private security patrols
- The two patrol services working in this area. If you have wondered whether a paid patrol is worth it, or what the difference between the two actually is, this is a better way to find out than the flyers that come through the mail slot.
